The Cultivating Hispanic and African Americans’ Reading, Math, Science (CHARMS) in Elementary Schools for Girls Conference proposal seeks to share baseline data on the achievement of African American and Hispanic girls in grades 3-6 on national and state assessments in the areas of reading, math and science for 100 educators/parents in a one-day STEM Conference that will be held on Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX.
Project Purpose:
The purpose of the CHARMS Conference is two-fold: to partner with schools across Texas to improve Hispanic and African American elementary school girls’ achievement, and to educate education stakeholders on careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), where girls are currently underrepresented. By providing resources in STEM careers to administrators, teachers, and parents of elementary-aged girls CHARMS staff seeks to encourage more young girls to pursue careers in these fields.
Project Objectives: The objectives of Project CHARMS in Elementary Schools for Girls Conference are to:
- Analyze national and state test results by gender, ethnicity and subject matter objectives.
- Organize a one-day conference for 100 teachers, administrators and parents from 20 school districts about test data for African American and Hispanic girls.
- Inform African American and Hispanic girls about STEM careers.
- Disseminate research about Hispanic and African American girls about their reading, mathematics and science skills in grades 3-6.
